floor-games.jpgSkirmisher Publishing is now offering Floor Games by H.G. Wells through DriveThruRPG. The book is a not-so-serious study of children’s games played with toy miniatures and models. It is also available in print form through Amazon, as is Wells’ later work, and perhaps the first example of a miniatures war game rule set, Little Wars.

Premium Kobold

kobold-q.pngKobold Quarterly, often referred to as the spiritual successor to Dragon Magazine, will be offering subscribers a free premium from Highmoon Media Productions. Individuals who are subscribers as of April 18th will receive The Havenmine Gauntlet, part of Highmoon’s Domains of Adventure series. This bonus roleplaying supplement features a dungeon adventure location situated between warring clans of kobolds and gnomes. A week after its initial release, Highmoon will offer it for sale to the general public.

guardian_logo.jpgNot really news, I think. From the Guardian:

A new study reconfirms that board games which require counting (such as Snakes and Ladders) boost math skills at early ages. Games without numerical spaces, such as Candyland, do not.

By my calculation, that means that starting your kids on ASL could achieve an even bigger improvement, right?

jessica_alba.jpgDark Angel star Jessica Alba is a known board game fan. In the past, we’ve heard about her love for Charades, Pictionary, Monopoly, and Jenga. (source, source)

Her latest blog entry indicates that she’s now into Apples to Apples. A step in the right direction. Anyone want to send her a copy of Ticket to Ride?

Lego Combat

brickarms2.jpgGizmodo recently reported on BrickArms, a company that custom builds Lego minifigs and minifig weapons. Available are weapons from WWII through the modern era, as well as science fiction arms.

Now, cool as that is, what I’d really like to do is pair that with a set up for BrikWars, the third-party system for Lego wargaming.

11 Million Served

days-of-wonder.jpgDays of Wonder, publisher of modern family-oriented board games, has surpassed 11 million games played through its online service. The company began offering online play in December 2002, but the popularity of this option really surged after the launch of Ticket to Ride online in October 2004. The big 10 million mark was hit just this past January, putting the rate at about 5 million per year.

sexy_slang.jpgChristi Smith and Ted Scofield, founders of PFF Entertainment, found that their game Pervartistry was selling modestly, but not as well as they hoped.

By changing the name to Sexy Slang, they landed an appearance on CNBC’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch” twice, were featured on Montel Williams and ABC News, and landed a deal with Barnes and Noble.

nigerian_scrabble_federation_logo.jpgWhich I guess is better than the other way around. Although, from what I hear about Nigerian elections, it might be safer if it was the other way around.

The Turaki Scrabble Championship may only be held if the Adamawa state government, the event’s sponsor, is re-elected. Click here for more on Nigerian Scrabble.
